  • Fetal Intracardiac Echogenic Focus

Clinical Features:

An 18 years old female patient came for a routine 2nd-trimester ultrasound scan.

Ultrasound Features:

- A small bright echogenic dot (<3mm) is noted at the left ventricle.

- Normal rests of the fetal organs.

Remember:

- Always compare the echogenicity with an adjacent bone to avoid overdiagnosis. The echogenic cardiac focus should be as bright as the bone.

- Echogenic focus is considered to represent mineralization within the papillary muscles.

- Echogenic cardiac focus may be found in isolated cases or in trisomy 21 & 13.

- Multiple & bilateral echogenic cardiac foci have a high association with aneuploidy.
